Overview:

Some projects land on your desk and immediately remind you why this work matters.

Designing the Rian Immigrant Center’s 2024 Annual Report was one of those projects.

This year marked Rian’s 35th anniversary of supporting immigrant and refugee families across Greater Boston — a milestone that carries decades of stories, policy shifts, resilience, and community strength. Distilling all of that into a single report is no small lift, but it’s the kind of challenge we’re built for.

From the start, our approach was intentional: let the storytelling lead, and let the design make space for the humanity within it. We focused on clean grids, bold but restrained color moments, and photography that lets people be fully themselves. Rian’s work is complex and often heavy, and we didn’t want to dramatize that weight — we wanted to honor it. At the same time, there’s so much vibrancy in what happens when families access the support they deserve, and the design needed to reflect that, too.

What we love most about the finished piece is its sense of grounded hope. You can feel the seriousness of the work, but you can also see the possibility threaded through each story, each portrait, each page. That balance is a credit to Rian’s team and their 35 years of impact.

We’re grateful to Rian — a first-time client, no less — for trusting us with their story. And to our team, who used design thoughtfully and strategically to make this important work not just visible, but undeniable.
