New Door Ventures - Annual Report
Overview:
For New Door Ventures' 45th anniversary annual report, the goal was to create a publication that honored the organization's legacy while communicating the measurable impact of its workforce development programs. The report needed to engage donors, partners, and community stakeholders through clear storytelling, compelling data visualization, and a design system that reflected New Door's mission and values.
One of the most significant creative decisions came at the very beginning: choosing illustration over photography for the cover.
While photography is often the default for nonprofit communications, we saw an opportunity to approach the story differently. Because New Door works alongside young people navigating employment and career pathways, we wanted to avoid turning participants into visual shorthand for the organization's impact. Instead, illustration offered a way to communicate growth, possibility, and transformation without asking any individual to represent an entire community or experience.
That decision shaped the tone of the entire report.
Rather than centering a single definition of success, the visual language focused on becoming—capturing the optimism, momentum, and potential that define New Door's work. The illustrated cover established a warm, approachable identity that carried throughout the publication while creating space for readers to connect with the mission on a more universal level.
Inside, the report balanced storytelling with accountability. Custom infographics, data visualizations, and a geographic impact map translated complex program outcomes into clear, engaging visuals that made key metrics easy to understand. The layout was designed to celebrate 45 years of impact while reinforcing the organization's credibility through transparent reporting and measurable results.
The final publication demonstrated that nonprofit annual reports can do more than present numbers—they can embody an organization's values through every design decision. By pairing thoughtful illustration with accessible information design, the report invited supporters to see both the legacy New Door has built and the future it continues to create.
